PROCESS: Please enter your responses to the research question in the space below.
You may list as many items as you wish (and we hope you will!), but please list each item separately -- that is, if you say wish to list widget1, process2, and idea3 as important, please list each item as a separate bullet point (asterisk), as we will be rank ordering these later. Do not list them as a single paragraph, as that will hamper the process.
Please also add your name or initials after each item so that we can follow up with you if we need additional information or leads to examples, as I have done here [Larry]
If an item on your list is already listed here, just add your comment to the end of it, with your initials.
Research Question Two
What technologies that have a solid user base in consumer, entertainment, or other industries should learning-focused institutions be actively looking for ways to apply?
- Teleconferencing, video conferencing, video chat [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Tablet PCs [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Social networking tools – Facebook – Myspace [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Miniaturization [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Use of public datasets – Google maps [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Personal broadcasting – podcasts [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Social networking [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Better interface design — User friendly apps – Well-designed web pages – Google as an example [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Portable devices – cell phones converging with laptops [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Personalized computing - (laptop stores your digital life) [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Gaming [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Video via broadband both HD and low-res [U Wisconsin educational tech staff]
- Audio Books have a huge potential which hasn't yet been seriously tapped into by education or publishing. [Josie Fraser]
- Mainstream gaming platforms and peripherals - especially handhelds - just look at the incredible success of Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, the potential of Eye Toy, dance mats, Guitar Hero etc. [Josie Fraser] (JG)
- Academic Publishing 2.0 The process of review and scholary publication has just been tinering with the edges of the potential -- PlOS, Google Scholar, etc are helping change the face of publishing [AL]
- Going to the Source Wider scale adoption, integration of Open Source tools -- It is hard not to find something to do a job on SourceForge or FreshMeat.... [AL] [Josie Fraser]
- Cognitive tools like Wikipedia, Google, even EBay [Richard Katz] [Josie Fraser]
- Trusted Reference Sources Wikipedia still raises polarized opinions, but beyond the hyped stories where it fails are thousands more where it provides reliable information. Do we need the second layer of trust on group authored content? [AL] [LJ] [Josie Fraser - I'd move this to Q1: Wikipedia's use in education is already established, if not officially acknowledged]
- Specialized media tools like Photoshop, Flash, Director ... [Richard Katz] and watch out when things like video editing/mixing are done in web interface, e.g. JumpCut [AL] [IB]
- Peer-to-peer filesharing This has been music and video, but now is expanding beyond these. [Roy Pea]
- Video & audio sharing includes podcasting, remixing, and tagging these resources. Sharing "points of view" YouTube. [Roy Pea] [John Weber] [IB] i think this is on campuses now -- just not among faculty and staff [LJ] [Josie Fraser](JG)
- Gaming to learn [Roy Pea]. I second that (JPJ ) [LJ] Game Design Initiative is gathering steam at Cornell for learning and with an eye toward carrer potential (JG)
- High Definition Video [Timmo Dugdale]
- Personal broadcasting [Timmo Dugdale] [Bill Shewbridge] [LJ]
- Social bookmarking -- delicious [Timmo Dugdale] Tagging in general [Cyprien] [LJ] (JPJ)
- video blogs [Timmo Dugdale]
- multiplayer environments croquet, second life, world of warcraft [Timmo Dugdale] [LJ] [Josie Fraser](JPJ)
- Skype, IM and other synchronized communication tools [Timmo Dugdale] Text messaging and instant messaging tools only seem to be getting more popular with students. This seems like a good technology for instructors to adopt {RS} [LJ] [NN] [Josie Fraser - again, I'd move this to Q1, established technologies (operating under the official radar)]
- Recommendation Systems Amazon, NetFlix, etc). we need to find ways to apply these to things people read. We do not do a good job of bringing interests people have together with learning opportunities. [Roy Pea] How about a recommendation system for faculty with some level of quality control? "If your academic interests are these, you'll like Prof XXX's course on ...."[JH] [LJ] A Fake Mockup ;-) (AL) .... Pandora technology with Gutenberg or Google Scholar content [Julius] [LJ] . Reputation systems also go hand-in-hand with this idea (JPJ) [John Weber] [Cyprien] [Josie Fraser]
- Specialized Media Tools Tivo your classes or make recommmendatons for you? Picassa? Video hosting with functionality [JH]
- YouTube for College After spending 15 years "debating" the efficacy of video on the web, consumer driven behavior suggests ours was an "academic" exercise. What are we going to do about the explosion of video to help advance the mission of the university. [Lev Gonick] [John Weber] Beyond what we are already doing with streaming on the institutional level, there is a growing demand from students and some faculty to host video content. [Bill Shewbridge] or iTunesVideoU??? (AL) [Josie Fraser]
- Audience Created Content Making the line more vague between producers and consumers of content (Yikes, Snakes on a Plane!) and Long Tail sorts of thinking [AL] Citizen Journalism, etc. (JPJ)
- IPTV Jeff Pulver makes the point that IPTV is the next big thing. Jeff's point is that this is not about bringing commercial TV to the web but rather now the hundreds of IPTV only projects expressing creativity, critical reflection, and of course plenty of randomness. Other than the Online Student TV Networkhow are universities preparing to join this tidal wave? [Lev Gonick] OSTN is a great model. We are just starting to see the possibilities of sharing content both ways with Internet2. [Bill Shewbridge, strong concurrence here -PDL]
- Google AdWords Isn't it time that someone (NMC?) asked the question if the time has come to revisit the sacred question of non-commercial activity on college web sites? With rich content and experience economy now front and center on the college campus, there are those who would be most interested in exploring "click through" economics to drive college eye balls directly from their web sites to advertisers. I will posit that more than 25% of google searches originate on the college DNS. Why do we need google.com to inter-mediate? Google is only too happy to have their AdWord technology used in the .edu domain. Can we contribute to the deficits and other budget pressures that universities face by driving consumer behaviors straight from our domains to advertisers? [Lev Gonick](JPJ) We (MIT) have industries, corporations, etc. who sponsor courses now. These are largely project-based courses but they underwrite the signficant costs that are incurred. A preliminary step leading to AdWords is simply changing academic institutional policy to acknowledge that which is already happening - allowing course pages, for example, to reflect the sponsorship that is being provided [PDL]
- Web-based Productivity Apps Writely, Gmail, NumSum, etc. They are becoming ubiquitous, accessible from anywhere with a network connection, enable sharing and collaboration by default. These along with web-based desktops and USB-key environments could mean the lab computer of the future could look quite different [Scott Leslie] Ditto, especially when they can import/expor content to standard formats, or publish to external sources (e.g. publish to blog) I like/use Gliffy for flowcharts. diagrams. Side track to grop[AL][NN]
- Digital Asset Management North Plains, Interwoven. Maybe the fit with cottage-mode of production is not great, but when you see sophisticated DAM in action at the big media outfits it makes the LOR work in higher ed look pretty basic.[Scott Leslie] ...and we need to figure this out, soon, like yesterday! [John Weber](JPJ) Where did I put my content? I think that's what faculty will be asking int he not-toodistant future (JG)
- Non-Linear Narrative Entertainment and popular culture move towards richer, more complex forms of content (Lost), or narratives via multimedia Lonelygirl15 [AL] [LJ]) Collaboratively constructed non-linear narrative with chapters created by 'competing' authors [Cyprien]
- Social Network Service (or SNS) [1], [2]. "NOT anonymousness" is important. Although I put a link to a Japanese SNS site, I think there are so many SNSs in the world! [Shoji Kajita] [LJ]
- Precise Physical Tracking / Remote instrumentation / monitoring like UPS parcel tracking on steroids to bring science data / statistics / realtime world events to armchair enthusiasts [Cyprien] [LJ](JPJ)
- SMS Video Message Boards are appearing in coffee shops and elsewhere. They allow people with text messaging cell phones to post messages on a common display, and can include more sophisticated features such as voting. (see http://www.pangolinsms.com/tech01_what-is-imu.htm, or http://locamoda.com/applications/streetmessenger/) [PDL]
