[edit] The 2008 Horizon Report: Toward a Research Agenda

With the release of the 2008 edition in this annual series, the NMC is continuing the concerted, international effort started last year to describe a research agenda based on the six practices and technologies featured in the 2008 edition of the Horizon Report. You are invited to participate in this process, contribute to the discussion, and help shape directions for future research in these topics across higher education.

[edit] What are the missing pieces for Collaboration Webs to be implemented in higher education?

  • Collaboration software; faculty development.
  • Eases cross institutional authentification; administrative buy in for that.
  • Does this improve learning? What characteristics or attributes would faculty really want to support their research.
  • The three major groups - students, faculty and administration - are not on the same page. Seems to be the different groups are talking by each other, than with each other.
  • Cross campus authentification and authorization processes not widely adopted.
  • Share desktop. Share applications, not just document. Share what my students are doing.
  • What challenges in reading and learning do these technologies solve.
  • Enhanced profiles.
  • More really - side from the human component - buyin.
  • Generally more awareness.
  • Faculty buyin; accessibility to high quality video; bandwidth.
  • Interviews with faculty and students and administrative types across multiple contexts to inform requirements.

[edit] What kind of research would you like to see around Collaboration Webs

  • Assessment is not capturing what's important: such as impact on learning.
  • Exploration of different economic models. Analysis of collatorative approaches. Federated identity management.
  • What kind of economic models are being developed around this? Permability.
  • What levels this technology is being employed and how does that affect its usability?
  • Faculty - student research collaboration - help make faculty "critical thinking" more transparent.
  • Research that is tied to assessment and collaborative web; increased participation in the classroom activities.
  • Clear service descriptions and ease of access upon request. Value of multiple tiers of "remote collaboration solution/service"; deliverable would be a grid.
  • Students from multiple campuses connecting across disciplines; connection with peers and fellow citizens in multiple locations.

[edit] What are the learning implications of Collaboration Webs?

  • Move toward using a single device; would not have to carry laptop.
  • What support is needed for those that collaboration is not ideal learning style.
  • Collaborate anywhere. Find others doing similar work/development.
  • That it relates to other Horizon technologies (collective intelligence, data mashups, etc.)
  • Building expertise for/with students around inquiry; facilitating student collaboration in/on research.
  • Greater experiential learning; lack of F2F contact.
