The New Media Consortium's Emerging Technologies Initiative focuses on expanding the boundaries of teaching, learning and creative expression by creatively applying new tools in new contexts. The Horizon Project, the centerpiece of this initiative, charts the landscape of emerging technologies in higher education and produces the NMC’s annual Horizon Report.

In 2008, the NMC is introducing several new Horizon Projects focused on specific program areas, including Horizon.Museum, which will consider the role of emerging technologies on museums. The Horizon Report for Museums, scheduled for release in June, 2008, will describe key technologies and trends likely to impact cultural stewardship, education, interpretation, management, audience engagement, and other aspects of museum practice during the next few years.

Members of the museum community are encouraged to participate in the Horizon.Museum Project, as users of and contributors to the wiki, or by tagging resources in del.icio.us, using the Project's tag hzmuseum08. The editors of the Horizon Report for Museums, Susan Chun and Leonard Steinbach, may be contacted by sending email to horizon.museum.editors [at] nmc.org.
