  • Obama's transition team urges Congress to postpone DTV cutover (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:55:00 -0800)
With the money well all dried up and a monumental transition looming, Barack Obama's transition team is urging Congress to take a second look at letting the cutover take place as planned on February 17th. According to a letter recently sent to Capital Hill, John Podesta, co-chair of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team, stated: "With coupons unavailable, support and education insufficient, and the most vulnerable Americans exposed, I urge you to consider a change to the legislatively-mandated analog cutoff date." Quite frankly, this has the potential to be huge. When would it be rescheduled to? Would additional fundage be applied? How would broadcasters react? Obviously, we shouldn't have to wait long to see how this all pans out.[Thanks, Tommy]Filed under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentObama's transition team urges Congress to postpone DTV cutover originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:55:00 EST. • Pogoplug hands-on (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:41:00 -0800)
The Pogoplug USB to NAS adapter is really in a class of its won. Not only does it do the obvious -- allow you to turn any USB hard drive into a NAS -- but it is also has a built in web server. But no, they didn't stop there, for $79 you also get (in our best Billy Maze voice) a web service accessible at Pogoplug.com that gives you the same convenient access to your files anywhere on the internet via either a web browser or the file manager of your choice. There is also a slick little iPhone app available for free.Gallery: Pogoplug hands-onFiled under: Peripherals, Storage, NetworkingPogoplug hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:41:00 EST. • Kodak OLED picture frame hands-on (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:16:00 -0800)
Totally over the top and ridiculously expensive, Kodak's 7.6-inch OLED picture frame is still a serious want. The image was every bit as beautiful as we expected but surprised us with the frame's ability to playback HD video in such a fluid manner. The touch-controls along the bezel did what we wanted with little thought, albeit, with some lag. Not horrible but certainly annoying if we ever decide to hand Kodak $1,000 to take one home.Gallery: Kodak OLED picture frame hands-onFiled under: CES, DisplaysKodak OLED picture frame hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:16:00 EST. • Samsung ST10 combines digicam and PMP, practically snaps pics for you (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:05:00 -0800)
Also making the rounds this week is Sammy's ST10, the 9 megapixel companion to the newly announced TL100. In addition to the rather ho-hum face detection we see so often these days, this claims to be the first camera with facial recognition: it keeps track of your favorite faces, prioritizing them when focusing in the future. Also included is a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, integrated MP3 player, Digital Image Stabilization, Smart Scene Recognition and more. This bad boy will be available from February 2009, priced at £179 (roughly $270).Filed under: CES, Digital CamerasSamsung ST10 combines digicam and PMP, practically snaps pics for you originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:05:00 EST. • Palm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on gallery (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:00:00 -0800)
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Palm_Pre_in_depth_impressions';We just sat down with Palm for a more in-depth look at the device, and here are our takeaways. First off, the software and hardware they're showing right now aren't the final versions. They're updating and tweaking as we speak, so some of the features haven't been implemented yet. Our take? Check it all out after the break, along with video, a full spec rundown... and in case you're wondering... it rhymes with Tree!Gallery: Palm Pre first hands-on with live updates, part 2!Continue reading Palm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on galleryFiled under: Cellphones, CESPalm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on gallery originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST. • New BUGModules hands-on (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:59:00 -0800)
These new BUGModules from BUG Labs aren't much to look at, but just holding them in your hands really gets your gears going about what new kinds of custom gadgets you could come up with. The new modules are really ones that open up the possibilities and make us think, "what if I want to use more than four modules?" The usefulness of the wireless adapters like WiFi and 3G go without saying, but the possibilities of having a projector in your pocket with sound could really lead to something. And last but not least, who wouldn't want the Swiss Army Knife of input and output on their custom gadget? • Video: hands-on with the iriver P7 (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:58:00 -0800)
A definite highlight of iriver's CES booth was the P7 PMP and of course we had to get up close and personal with it. The 4.3-inch PMP was chillin' in a docking station among the other P series devices, and we managed to grab some snaps. Just like the WAVE-HOME we caught before it, the interface seemed super smooth. The UI made the most of that expansive (and gorgeous) screen, and the FM tuner seemed to do its job. We got a walkthrough of the device on video after the break, and don't forget to check out the gallery below that shows the device in all its "in the wild" glory.Gallery: Video: hands-on with the iriver P7Continue reading Video: hands-on with the iriver P7Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable VideoVideo: hands-on with the iriver P7 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:58:00 EST. • Samsung unveils new DisplayLink, PCoIP and 3D monitors (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:57:00 -0800)
Among the embarrassment of riches that CES has been for Sammy fans thus far, we have several new items available for your consideration. The SyncMaster 930ND is a 19-inch PC-over-IP-enabled display developed with Teradici Corporation that sports four USB connectors, 2-way audio, and DVI-out for a secondary display. For gamers, the 22-inch 2233RZ is an NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision-compatible monitor, due to hit the streets in April for an MSRP of $349. And rounding out the collection, the company has added two more DisplayLink monitors to the mix: the SyncMaster D190SU (19-inch) and D220SU (22-inch). No word on a release date or price for this one, but you'll know as soon as we do. • HP Mini 1000 six-cell battery spotted by Mr. Blurrycam (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:56:00 -0800)
While most folks will apparently have to wait at least a few more weeks to get their hands on a six-cell battery for their HP Mini 1000, Xavier Lanier of Notebooks.com was able to snag one a tad early and, whilst he was showing off the stash of gadgets hidden in his Scott eVest, he gave everyone a little glimpse of it. As you can sort of see above, it expectedly adds a bit of bulk to the otherwise slim Mini 1000, but we're guessing that's a more than acceptable trade-off for those craving some extra runtime. Still no word on a price or exact release date just yet, unfortunately, but those details should be popping up before too long. Hit up the link below for the full, slightly less blurry video.[Via imjosh.com] Filed under: LaptopsHP Mini 1000 six-cell battery spotted by Mr. Blurrycam originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:56:00 EST. • Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera debuts at CES (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:38:00 -0800)
We heard that Polaroid would be punching out a PoGo-infused camera in 2009, and it only took 'em eight days into the new year to do just that. Today at CES, the $199 PoGo Instant Digital Camera is making its grand entrance, utilizing the tried-and-true ZINK printing technology. Sadly (and we do mean sadly), there's not even a mention of how many megapixels this thing boasts, which is a pretty telling sign that you won't be getting SD850IS-type quality out of it. Nevertheless, it'll print out ink-free 2- x 3-inch images right from itself, so maybe the quality isn't that big of a deal after all. Or maybe we're just sympathetic.Filed under: CES, Digital CamerasPolaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera debuts at CES originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:38:00 EST. • Vivitek debuts at CES with seven projectors (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:00 -0800)
Talk about a strong opening -- this is Vivitek's first CES appearance, and it's come to Las Vegas with seven projectors. With those kind of numbers, we'll hit the highlights and leave it to you to hit the link for full details. The big light gun is the LED-packing, 1080p H608FD; not for the faint of heart at just under $20,000, but at least you'll never have to change a bulb to enjoy the 10,000:1 contrast ratio. On the other end of the scale in size and price is the $999, 5.7-pound D832MX that is a 1024x768 HT/business switch hitter. Like we said, there are five more models at the show that you're invited to peruse in the link, including the D5500 we've seen before.Filed under: CES, Displays, HDTVVivitek debuts at CES with seven projectors originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:37:00 EST. • Android shows up on X200, caught on video (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:00 -0800)
It seems like Google's Android has a bad case of wanderlust, spreading its wings and making appearances on all sorts of devices after Mobile-facts showed it could be done. The little green guy quickly headed over to HP's Mini-Note 2133, and now we've got footage of it in the wild, installed on a Lenovo X200. The machine goes from a cold boot to UI in a solid 25 seconds, and while we still don't think the resulting interface is exactly keyboard and mouse friendly, we're excited to see what the future holds for our favorite synthetic life form/operating system.[Thanks, Jayanth]Continue reading Android shows up on X200, caught on videoFiled under: LaptopsAndroid shows up on X200, caught on video originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:37:00 EST. • ViewSonic launches Atom-based computing line (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:00 -0800)
ViewSonic has just introduced a new computing line geared towards the netbook / nettop set. All three Atom-based machines sport Windows XP Home, a 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 160GB storage. VieBook is a 10.2-inch netbook with all the usual connectivity options and an MSRP of $429. The VPC100 ViePC is an all-in-one device, measuring a mere 35mm thin, with an 18.5-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD screen and should be priced at $549. Rounding up the lineup, the LinkPC is a nettop, designed to be strapped to the back of any VESA compatible monitor, and has an MSRP of $399. The latter becomes available sometime in March, while the other two will be doing their thing in February. • Dell introduces XPS 625 gaming rig (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:00 -0800)
Dell has been pretty laptop-heavy at CES so far, but it looks to be balancing things out a bit today, with it introducing its new gamer-minded XPS 625 desktop. This one is AMD through and through, and includes your choice of AMD Phenom or Phenom II Black Edition processors, ATI Radeon HD4670 or HD4850 graphics cards (in single or CrossFireX configurations), and some other suitably high-end specs all around, including up 8GB of RAM, a whole host of hard drive options and, of course, an AlienFX custom lighting system to remind you just why you bought it. Best of all, prices start at a reasonable $999 for a decently-equipped system, and you can get your order in right now. • ASUS debuts 18.4-inch W90 gaming laptop at CES 2009 (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:36:00 -0800)
Got an itch for a gaming laptop that's big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world's first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that will enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.Filed under: LaptopsASUS debuts 18.4-inch W90 gaming laptop at CES 2009 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 17:36:00 EST. • Sony speaks about VAIO P, evidently thinks it's not a netbook (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:51:00 -0800)
What's up with companies suddenly not wanting to call their netbooks, um, netbooks? Sony's Mike Abary sat down with LaptopMag in order to discuss the VAIO P, and as always, the company didn't hesitate to shoot off a few more-than-controversial tidbits. For starters, Mr. Abary insinuated that the 8-inch machine wasn't actually a good fit for the netbook category, noting that "the type of premium customer it is targeting probably doesn't even know what a netbook is." Furthermore, he reckoned that around 60% of prospective VAIO P buyers would be women, and it doesn't view 12-inch laptops as a threat. If you're hungry for even more one-liners that you can jump all over, head on down to the read link -- just remember, yelling at your LCD doesn't do anyone any good.Filed under: CES, LaptopsSony speaks about VAIO P, evidently thinks it's not a netbook originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:51:00 EST. • There will be a GSM-friendly 3G Palm Pre (Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:49:00 -0800)
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/There_will_be_a_GSM_friendly_3G_Palm_Pre'; We've gotten Palm on the record saying that there's a WCDMA (read: UMTS world 3G) version of the Pre in the works, though we don't know when or where. That means that the AT&Ts, T-Mobiles, and Vodafones of the world will get a shot at this baby. Suggestion, Palm: "soon" and "everywhere."Update: We've just seen a copy of the Pre's press release, and sadly, the 3G GSM version is listed as being intended for "other regions" -- in other words, places not served by Sprint. The good news, we guess, is that we've also confirmed that it's HSDPA, so at least it'll be hauling ass.Filed under: Cellphones, CES, HandheldsThere will be a GSM-friendly 3G Palm Pre originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:49:00 EST. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Palm_pre_first_hands_on_with_live_updates'; This is it! Our first go-round with Palm's newest entry to the smartphone field -- the pre. Watch this page for updates on our first impressions, a live stream of photos after the break, and observations on the company's rebirth into the marketplace.1:19PM - First photos are up. They're running us through a demo of the phone, so we haven't gotten to touch it just yet -- the tension is killing!1:38PM - They let us play with it a bit -- while they held the other end, of course. The keyboard is Centro-esque, with shallow presses and cramped spacing. The actual keys are rubbery and easy enough to find with the fingernails of our massive man hands, other folks might have better luck using the pads of their fingers. The touchscreen isn't quite as responsive as the iPhone or G1 -- or it could be the OS, there seems to be a tiny lag between a tap and an action -- but it's still pretty great. We spent mere seconds toying with the OS, but all the actions seem ultra-intuitive.Update: You can watch some video after the break!Gallery: Palm Pre hands-on: hardwareContinue reading Palm Pre first hands-on with live updates!Filed under: CellphonesPalm Pre first hands-on with live updates! originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:18:00 EST. Let's just say this straight out: the white Pentax K2000 is one of the hottest DSLRs we've ever seen. It's seriously lustworthy. Considering how great the reviews have been, we'd say it's definitely worthy of a spot on your list if you're in the market.
